Grace Lutheran Church and School

With a number of Missouri-Synod Lutherans living in Brenham and traveling to William Penn, Giddings, Lincoln, and elsewhere to worship, attempts were made to establish a place of worship in Brenham. On October 21, 1934 this group of Lutherans met for worship at the home of W.H. Sehlke. 28 individuals were present for that first worship service which was conducted by Pastor C.W. Luekens of Navasota. Grace Lutheran Church was formed on April 23, 1935 and became a member congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The congregation originally conducted services in the Old German Baptist Church which was located on South Day Street. In September of 1940 the congregation decided to build it's own facility and purchased five lots on Church Street where a house of worship could be built. Construction of that church building began on November 3, 1941. The church doors were opened and the church was dedicated to the Glory of God on February 8, 1942. Early in 1946, the congregation made plans to to begin a parochial school and to build an educational building. Grace Lutheran Day School was dedicated on November 16, 1947 and the school has been educating the children of Grace and the community since that time. It is now a Classical Lutheran School. As the congregation grew by God's grace, it became apparent that a larger facility was needed. In 1981 an intensive Stewardship Program began entitled "Together We Build". Ground breaking for Grace's present location on West Jefferson Street was on May 18, 1983. The church was dedicated on December 2, 1984. The Lord has allowed the congregation of Grace to worship at this location for nearly 35 years. Our worship services are liturgical in the historic tradition of the Christian Faith. You are welcome to come anytime and visit in worship or take a tour of our school! You have a place at Grace!
